Michigan Public Land Workday

Come join us for a day of fellowship while we work to enhance wildlife habitat on your public lands!
Plenty of room for the whole family!

Date:  9/30/2025

Time:  9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Location:  Hiawatha National Forest – Munising Ranger District

Bring (if you have): 5-gallon bucket, step ladder, pruning shears, work gloves

What: The Hiawatha National Forest needs a large quantity of jack pine cone (seed) in order to perform intensive habitat management that mimics the regeneration effects of fire (primarily harvesting and reforesting jack pine). Volunteers will work alongside National Forest staff to collect as many jack pine cones as possible.

Why: The Hiawatha National Forest manages several thousand acres of jack pine ecosystems that provide habitat for unique species like Kirtland’s warbler (pictured), American marten, snowshoe hare, sharp-tailed grouse, black-back woodpecker, white-tailed deer, and Canada rice grass. The Anishinaabeg used fire for forest stewardship to support hunting and gathering opportunities and culturally important species and communities for millennia. However, modern fire suppression has substantially decreased the frequency and size of wildfires in the Upper Peninsula, significantly restricting the amount of large acreage vegetation maintenance – so todays hunter’s and outdoor enthusiast need to help!

Where: We will meet at a pre-determined location on Buckhorn Road, about 15-20 minutes south of Munising, Michigan. The exact meeting location, map and additional information will be provided by email a few days before the event.
