The National Deer Association (NDA) is excited to welcome John Custodio as the newest intern on our Policy team for the Spring 2026 term. John will support NDA staff through August 1, contributing to our advocacy, policy analysis, and venison donation efforts. He brings a strong combination of field experience, communications expertise, and a personal passion for hunter recruitment and access to hunting.
A New York native, John is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Natural Resource Conservation at Paul Smith’s College, with an expected graduation date of August 2026. Prior to returning to academia, he worked as a journalist in upstate New York and Vermont.
“As a resident of the Adirondack Park in upstate New York, I have firsthand experience seeing how effective policy and advocacy can impact conservation work,” John said.
John will work under the supervision of NDA’s Director of Policy, Catherine Appling-Pooler, and will assist with policy analysis, legislative education initiatives, and NDA’s National Deer Processor Map.
John earned his bachelor’s degrees in journalism and biology from the State University of New York at Oswego in 2022.
“John brings a valuable blend of communications experience and conservation knowledge to our Policy team,” said Appling-Pooler. “We’re glad to have his support during a busy legislative season.”
Future internship opportunities with NDA are offered in six-month rotations and are posted on our Employment Page.
